While deforestation has occurred in the past with alarming rates, currently the rates are smaller than what has been observed previously. In the year 2000 7,037 square miles were being deforested while in 2011 2,408 square miles were so obviously progress has been made thanks to the Brazilian government placing more restrictions and the UN program REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) which is "
an effort to create a financial value for the carbon stored in forests, offering incentives for developing countries to reduce emissions from forested lands and invest in low-carbon paths to sustainable development. With organizations like these in place the people of the world can continue to preserve our natural resources while benefiting people and helping them to continue to make a living (UN-REDD).
In addition, finding ways to conserve the species by preventing habitat fragmentation to the best of our ability such as limiting road building and containing farming can make a significant difference.
We only get one earth so we must appreciate and preserve what we can to keep our globe as biodiverse as possible.
